site overview
Positioned 80km north of Rockhampton, Shoalwater Bay is the Australian Defence Force’s primary training area for large-scale, joint-force exercises. It is surrounded by national parks and covers more than 264,000ha of land and 180,000ha of sea.
The $135 million remediation project aims to enhance the quality and longevity of existing facilities over a 2-year timeframe on the Shoalwater Bay Training Area, to enable continued environmental sustainability for Australian Defence Force exercises and increase Defence’s amphibious training capability.
scope of works
Mitcon Projects serviced the FRP Package with an experienced crew of formworkers, steel fixers and concreters; led by our Supervision and Management personnel.
The package included specialised concrete pavement construction to allow Defence vehicles and machines to access the training facilities and waterways. Mitcon's pavement crew poured >5,000m3 of lean mix and steel-fibre concrete.
key outcomes
Mitcon Projects was able to successfully deliver the works within a highly sensitive environmental and cultural area, parts of which lie within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park World Heritage Area.
This required the team to work in testing environments and remain mindful of the surrounding flora and fauna. The Mitcon crew rose to the challenge and enjoyed working in an area of natural beauty.
