site overview
The USFPI NT Training and Ranges Project is part of a significant increase in government spend on Defence projects and a major bilateral project between Australia and the US. The Australian government is investing in the long term development and upgrade of defence facilities across the Northern Territory.
Bradshaw Field Training Area is located at Timber Creek adjacent to the NT/WA border, and provides over 9,000 square kilometres of training area. Works at Bradshaw includes the upgrade of Nackeroo Airfield to enhance C-17 and US MV-22 Osprey aviation operations.
Mitcon Projects was the principal FRP contractor for Nackeroo Airfield, which included over 25,000m2 of aircraft pavement concrete and over 5,000m2 of specialized heat-resistant aircraft hardstand. In addition, the team installed 25,000 dowels (+/- 3mm tolerance) and completed 6,000lm of saw cuts.
scope of works
The provision of all labour, plant, specialist equipment and steel reinforcement to complete the aircraft pavement and concrete hardstand.
key outcomes
The completion of this project marked the 10 year anniversary of Mitcon Projects’ operations in the Northern Territory. Through the Timber Creek Community Development Program we were able to build on our previous success with employing local and indigenous labour, and far exceeded the project specific levels in these areas.
The Mitcon team was able to successfully deliver the aircraft pavement in challenging environmental conditions, battling extreme humidity and high ambient temperatures. As always, Mitcon was focused on delivering the best outcome for our client and this was evident in the project meeting budget and timeframe constraints. The team designed and fabricated bespoke work bridges and utilized various mechanical screeds to complete the different types of pavement.
The successful completion of this project has further cemented our ability to deliver projects in extreme and remote environments.
