site overview
Positioned 80km north of Rockhampton, Shoalwater Bay is the Australian Defence Force’s primary training area for large-scale, joint-force exercises. It is surrounded by national parks and covers more than 264,000ha of land and 180,000ha of sea.
The $135 million remediation project aims to enhance the quality and longevity of existing facilities over a 2-year timeframe on the Shoalwater Bay Training Area, to enable continued environmental sustainability for Australian Defence Force exercises and increase Defence’s Amphibious training capability.
scope of works
Mitcon projects are responsible for the manufacture and install of concrete tilt up panels to 17 buildings. Work activities on the project include shop drawing and temporary works co-ordination, formwork, reinforcement and concrete place and finish to panels, erection and propping of panels, grouting and joint sealing.
key outcomes
Mitcon Projects extensive experience and local business position have played a key role in assisting Downer/FKG to deliver this project for Defence.
Over 340 panels were cast and installed across the project, with some as tall as 13.5m. To reduce the total number of panels, re-design work was undertaken to combine panels wherever possible, resulting in many of the panels being in excess of 45m2 and close to 20t in weight.
The works were completed by a workforce that exceeded 50 skilled workers during the peak of the project.
